After previously blogging about my day of viewing motorsport, ending it with looking forward to what promised to be an absorbing and fascinating contest in the Indycar Las Vegas series finale with a bumper 34-car grid, I am hugely saddened to say it ended with such tragedy, as wildcard and potential $5m jackpot winner Dan Wheldon died in what was a horrific 15-car crash.

It was the worst motorsport crash I have ever seen, and for that reason I’m not interested in putting a link to the actual incident, as it’s just terribly unpleasant. A couple of onboard cameras (including a frightening one of championship runner-up Will Power) displayed the uncomfortable violence of the multiple impacts for all concerned, bearing in mind these happened at 220mph.

When it does get an airing on a video site, I shall make an effort to find a suitable video of the moving five-lap tribute procession which concluded the day’s activities at the circuit. A very emotional, and sad, end to the season. Dario Franchitti may have taken the title, but I’m sure for everyone it’s an empty feeling.

RIP Dan Wheldon.
